Number
Sudoku
The logic grid that became a global obsession.
Sudoku is a number-placement puzzle where the goal is to fill a 9×9 grid so that every row, column, and 3×3 box contains the digits 1 through 9. Born from Latin-square theory and popularised by Japanese publisher Nikoli in the 1980s, it remains the world's most-played pencil puzzle.

2048
Swipe, merge, double — until you can't.
2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle on a 4×4 grid. Tiles with the same number merge when they collide, doubling in value. The goal is to reach the 2048 tile — and, for the brave, far beyond. Created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014, it became one of the most-cloned web games of the decade.

Logic
Minesweeper
The grid that taught a generation to count.
Minesweeper is a single-player puzzle where the player uncovers cells on a grid, using numerical hints to deduce which cells hide mines. Bundled with Windows since 1990, it became — for a generation of computer users — the gateway drug to logical deduction.

Mastermind
Crack the colour code in ten guesses.
Mastermind is a code-breaking game where one player (or the computer) sets a hidden sequence of coloured pegs, and the other tries to deduce it from limited guesses, receiving feedback after each. Commercialised in 1970 by Invicta Plastics, it remains a textbook example of constraint propagation.

Tetris
Seven shapes, infinite descent.

15-Puzzle
Fifteen tiles, one empty space, infinite headaches.
The 15-Puzzle is a sliding-tile puzzle: a 4×4 frame holds 15 numbered tiles and one empty space. Tiles adjacent to the empty space can be slid into it, and the goal is to arrange the tiles in numerical order. Mass-marketed in the 1880s, it caused the world's first global puzzle craze.

Sokoban
Push every box onto a target. No pulling allowed.
Sokoban is a transport puzzle: the player controls a warehouse keeper who must push boxes onto designated storage locations. Boxes can only be pushed, never pulled, and the keeper can only push one box at a time. Created by Hiroyuki Imabayashi in 1981, it remains one of the most analytically deep puzzle types ever designed.
